Your accommodation in New-Zealand is largely depends upon your lifestyle, the cost of living may vary from NZ$10000 per annum to NZ$16,000 per annum. You can obtain more information regarding cost of living from the New-Zealand High Commission or any of the approved Education Advisors or directly from the New-Zealand University or institute. In a majority of cases, your accommodation will be at a very short distance from your institute and the best place to get information regarding accommodation is to approach your institution. Moreover, the accommodation office at your institution will have a notice board with advertisements of flats. You can search on the newspaper classifieds which list rental properties.
Halls of residence or students hostels
These halls or hostels are usually located on campus or near-by with single or twin rooms. Students are provided with bed-linen and cleaning but, meals are eaten in a communal dining hall (taking care of special dietary needs). There is a warden in charge of the hostel and all social and sporting activities organized for residents. Computer labs and recreational rooms are also found in these hostels. Some of the institutes have self-catering hostels where 6 to 8 individuals can have their own bedrooms but they share a kitchen and living room.
Home-stay or private board
You can get a room in a suburban house, with a garden and lawns. As far as meal is concerned you are served by the host family. It is an excellent way to brush-up your English skills by meeting with the host family and neighbors around.
Rented house or apartment
One of the popular accommodation options is renting a house or apartment on your own or with other people. Most of the rental apartments are furnished along with microwave, a laundry, curtains and carpet. You are required to pay for electricity, gas, phone and water.
